John McDonagh, also known as WEB du Bois, was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, author, and Pan-Africanist. He was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. His brother, John Michael McDonagh, was a poet, playwright, and critic. He is best known for his play "The Playboy of the Western World", which was first performed in 1907.
